New cumulative updates now up for grabs on Windows 10

It’s Patch Tuesday, the day that all IT admins expect every month, some of them concerned that their computers might never boot again after the reboot.

As it happens every time as part of this patching cycle, the September 2018 Patch Tuesday brings cumulative updates for all Windows 10 versions.

What’s very important to know, however, is that only Windows 10 Creators Update and newer are still getting updates for Home and Pro SKUs. Support for Creators Update (version 1703) will come to an end next month, and users will have to upgrade to continue receiving security patches.

Enterprise and Education SKUs, as well as systems enrolled in the LTSC, will continue to receive support.

This month’s cumulative updates are the following: 1803 - KB4457128, 1709 - KB4457142, 1703 - KB4457138, 1607 - KB4457131, and 1507/RTM - KB4457132.

Since these updates land on Patch Tuesday, it’s obvious that they are particularly important for Windows 10 devices, as they include both security and non-security fixes.

There are vulnerabilities being addressed with this rollout, and needless to say, this makes it critical for Windows 10 devices to install them as soon as possible.

But as we said in the intro, there are users concerned that cumulative updates could actually do more harm than good, eventually leading to bugs and issues after rebooting to complete the install.

This is a concern that’s based on the behavior of older cumulative updates, which have become notorious for breaking down systems and failing to installs, but the number of issues reported lately has decreased substantially.

Of course, this is no guarantee that everything will work completely as expected, so we’ll keep an eye on reports pointing to possible issues and report back to you as soon as possible.

We’ll detail the content of each update in separate articles to be published soon, and you can click the links above to read what’s new in today’s Patch Tuesday rollout.
