If you’re in the market looking for a super-light laptop that scores extra points in terms of portability, there’s no need to check out the MacBook Air anymore (or wait for its successor).

Acer has just announced at the IFA show in Berlin the brand-new Swift 5 (SF515-51T) with a 15-inch screen. Tipping the scales at only 2.2 pounds (that’s 990 grams for our European readers), the new Swift 5 is the world’s lightest 15-inch laptop.

Despite reducing weight typically forces manufacturers to settle with a series of compromises like smaller battery and lighter and cheaper materials, this doesn’t seem to be the case of the new Swift, at least not at first glance.

The device claims to offer no less than 10 hours of battery life per charge, and Acer has used a modern design with smaller bezels of just 0.23 inches (5.87 mm) thanks to the use of magnesium-lithium alloy.

Hardware specifications

In terms of technical specs, the Acer Swift 5 comes is powered by either an Intel Core i5 8265U chip or an Intel Core i7 8565U unit, both of them part of the Whiskey Lake generation. These are paired with up to 16GB DDR4 memory.

The laptop can be equipped with up to 1TB SSD storage, and it comes standard with one USB Type-C Gen 2 port, and two USB Type-A ports, as well as an HDMI connector. Wi-Fi support is obviously offered as well, and so are Dolby Audio and a fingerprint reader for authentication. The 15-inch IPS display offers Full HD resolution.

As for the price, the device will go on sale in November in EMEA and in China starting at €1,099 and ¥7,499, respectively. Buyers in the United States will get it in January next year, with the base model to hit the shelves with a $1,099 price tag.
